IF you are good at writing you can run a very successful freelance business. Believe me.
I have worked for all kinds of publications and, I promise you, if you can write well you are in the minority.
On newspapers I have dealt with trainee reporters who after 13 years in school, three years at university and one year on a post-graduate journalism course cannot string two words together.
Look at forums on the internet. How many are so ungrammatical and so poorly-spelt they are incomprehensible?
You don't have to be a brilliant grammarian or a perfect speller or a Hemingway in the making. You merely have to be able to communicate clearly, write authoritively and make your work interesting.
With the rise of the internet, the demand for good writing has never been greater.
Let's look at some different types of writing. In later blogs I will go into great detail on the nuts and bolts of getting business and how to write for profit. For now, here's some food for thought. There are many more opportunities for making money than writing articles, short stories or books.
- CV writing (that's a resume, if you're American): Job seekers need to present a clear and concise document to potential employers that lists their strengths and their suitability for the job. An applicant may be perfectly suited for a particular job but may not have the ability to present their CV/resume in a way that will impress an interviewer.
- Copy writing: There is an ever-increasing demand for copy writing from ad agencies, non-profit agencies, and corporations. This is especially suitable for those with a flair for writing persuasively as clients always have products and services they want to sell.
- Search Engine Optimized (SEO) Keyword Articles: This market has grown exponentially in the preceding two years. Businesses and cyber marketing firms have realized that to succeed they must maintain high levels of traffic on their website and also conversion rates from this traffic. They need to provide content that meets their customers' needs. SEO keyword article writers meet this requirement. They write articles replete with common phrases and word combinations linked to their business. Every time someone searches for these phrases, the article comes up and helps to route customers to the website.
- Business writing: This area generates a large volume of business. Corporations are required to regularly produce documents like annual reports, brochures, direct mailers, sales letters, and other such materials. They are always on the lookout for writers, who can undertake these assignments. This can be source of regular income for you.
- E-book Writing and Publishing: You can well take on assignments in the realm of e-commerce by writing fiction and non-fiction e-books. An increasing number of people now prefer to buy literature on the net. You can cash in on this demand especially if you have an understanding of technology.
- Freelance Writing: There is a huge volume of papers, periodicals, newsletters and e-zines that are being produced regularly. This generates demand for articles on a variety of topics. You can delve into this field if you have a flair for this type of writing.
